What is a woman's worth?
There
are cultures that have different ideas about women. In America women are
considered equal but are not paid the same. In China women are considered equal
but there is a lack of politically. In Germany women are also considered equal
but they also don't get paid the same. Women around the world create
organizations because of these reason. In Germany women gathered together to
create an organization called Terre Des Femme. An organization that created an
ad that focused on gender equality and feminism. Terre Des Femme is trying to
change how German society views women.
Terre Des
Femme is a non-profit organization, originated in Germany. In 1981 the Terre
Des Femme organization was noted in an article about women rights in the Middle
East. In which it made an impact in the Middle East to become active on the
women's rights. This organization is trying to change how German society views
women for years this organization has been focusing on equal and inalienable
rights for women in the German society. They created an ad, with the help of
Theresa Wlokka the designer of the ad and other students from Miami Ad School
in Germany, provides a message on how society views women base on her clothing.
Their purpose of this ad is for the German society to not judge a woman base on
her clothing but to judge on her skills. The kind of skills that will lead to a
woman to her job. Terre Des Femme shows their purpose by creating three similar
ads. In these three similar ads there is a woman's chest, legs and feet with a measurements
line of unavoidable names towards a woman. Their ad expresses to the audience
of German society about women dressing the way the want to without being called
names. Terre Des Femme vision is that a woman should have equal rights,
self-determination and freedom of her own body. Therefore they created this ad
because they want the German society to understand that a woman should be able
to walk on the streets without being judge. Base on this organizations view on
women their ad shows pathos to express to the German society.
These
three ads on women indicate pathos. Pathos is the emotion of what conveys the
viewer to the ads. Since Terre Des Femme focus is on equal rights and feminism
they present their ads by putting a measurement of words on a woman's chest,
legs and feet. The outcome of this is for the German society to feel that it is
not all right to judge a woman base on what she wears. However, when a woman
views this ad they can start to feel unease because they might know that these are
real facts that happen in their society perhaps around the world. Perhaps
that’s why Terre Des Femme decided to display their ad with a rule measurements
of mean words to prove to their society that these words are unnecessary to use
on a woman, because a woman should be judge on her skills. Another way they
show pathos is the way they show the woman's chest, legs and feet. The way they
reveal a woman's chest is by having only, which seems like a bustier top that doesn't
cover the woman's chest much. Next, is a woman's legs, they reveal her by
wearing skirt that the length of it is not long but short. Lastly, is a woman's
feet, the woman's feet is not wearing any shoes, but her feet are rising up as
if she was wearing heels. Also the way that they use the colors, that don't
look to colorful can persuade a person on their views on a woman. These ads
demonstrate how the German society views women, and the way they use
meaningless words to describe a woman. They are trying to send out a message to
Germany of Regardless of what the person is wearing they should still be
treated with respect. The effect of these ads in the German society provides
emotions that can cause women to unite for their equal rights. Terre Des Femme
beliefs is that a woman should be able to roam around the streets without
society controlling them from accomplishing their goals to success.
The
views on women in German are not equal to men. Terre Des Femme ad about a woman
being a judge by her clothing came out recently in 2015, to convey the message
across Germany and around the world about women should be respected at all
times. Their ad appeals to ethos, the ethics of moral principles of right and
wrong. The wrong thing about Germany's society is that they judge women on
appearance such as her clothing. Terre Des Femme ad clearly states that a
woman's worth is not based on her appearance but her skills. They way that this
ad is being portrayed is that everyday women have to go through so much in
their life just to succeed. Women also have to try to fit in society without
being judge. Women in Germany whose organization have increase since 1981 have
helped women fight for their equal and inalienable rights. An example regarding
their ad on women is that a woman should be able to have control of her life
not society having control over women. Therefore this ad message is about women
having the freedom and respect in the German society. The way this ad
shows ethos is by the line measurement of words that a woman is being labeled
base on the kind of clothing she wears. Another Reason why Terre Des Femme
created this ad along with some students from Miami Ad School in Germany is
because they want to value what's right for a woman to fit in society. Women
may not be able to have the same skills as men, such as being able to lift
heavy things but women are strong base on other skills. A message to Germany
through this ad is that the way society views women is wrong, so this also
appeals to logos.
According
to this ad the way Germany views women is based on their appearance and not on
their skills. Terre Des Femme ad appeals to logos. Logos is the logical reason
of the purpose of the ad. The way this as appeals to logo is the way the
language is being put on the ad and how these words describe a woman. These
labels are words of how Germany views women in their country. Germany is the
largest economy in Europe, meaning that they are powerful in politics. Despite
the fact that Germany is powerful, it seems that men are more in control than
women. So this makes women in Germany not equal to men. So because of this
issue, the Terre Des Femme ad provides an accurate message on how women are
being portray in German society. This ad has been seen in some areas of the
world. The reason is because they are trying to send out the message that they
provided with ad about a woman's rights of freedom. Another way that this ad
shows logos is the way the clothes are measured of its length. Such as a short
skirt, a bustier top and how high the stilettos are. As a result of length of
the clothing, this ad can convey another reason to why women should be given
equal and unalienable rights. Since Terre Des Femme main focus is on women's
rights they want to be able to make a woman feel safe in the environment that they
are living in. Besides, none of these labels are complimentary words that a
woman would like to hear. To elaborate more, the ads logic reason is so that
Germany would be able to accept women that way they are. Terre Des Femme ad is
a reasonable for people in Germany and other societies to recognize that it is
wrong to label a woman and women should be respected.
The central theme,
of this ad is to try to change the views on women. Since, Terre Des Femme ad
has been spreading through social media. Therefore, women in Germany have
protest on the federal government on equal pay rights. Women in Germany want
their equal rights so that they no longer have to be judged on their
appearance. This organization has been in Germany since 1981, now they have
finally grabbed Germany's attention on how women are viewed. The moral
principle of wrong and right of labeling women is not okay.
It
has been shown that, women in Germany are not equal and are being judged by the
appearance rather than her skills. Terre Des Femme ad took it to the next level
on how society views woman. By showing a woman's chest, legs and feet on the ad
they explain to society that it is wrong to label a woman. The importance of
this ad is that if society decided to judge a woman, then they should judge on
her skills. In overall this organization's mission if equal rights, self-determination
and freedom for women, so that’s why they created this ad. This ad can have
different meanings to society. Terre Des Femme ad wants people around the world
to change their views on women. They want people to view women as part of their
society. So what will society do to change their views on women?
While writing my Critical analysis I learned how to analyze an advertisement or commercial. This helped critique the ad by looking at the three modes of persuasion. These are Ethos, Pathos, and logos. While looking at different ad/commercials I got to see the different kinds of purposes each of them had. At first it was difficult to find an ad/commercial that grabbed my attention. I went through a lot of commercials, but after awhile I came to encounter an ad from an organization called Terre Des Femme. I analyzed this ad and I saw how this organization used ethos, pathos and logos to persuade a person. I knew that while analyzing and critiquing the ad I had to be pay attention to the details that the creators use. So as I kept analyzing it I saw how this organization used a lot of ethos, each time I analyzed it gave a different feeling. They even used logos and pathos to persuade their viewers more. In overall i enjoyed writing this critical analysis, because not only did I learned how to analyze an ad or commercial but I learned how ethos, pathos and logos are part of the ad and how companies use to persuade their viewers.
